Vent: Old boss told me to "just wing it" on layout grids and it cost me 2 full days
My last boss at the sign shop in Tulsa kept saying grids were overkill and to just eyeball everything. So I did that for like 6 months on vehicle wraps and banners. Then last month I had to redo a whole fleet design because nothing lined up across 12 different door panels. Took me 22 hours to fix what woulda been 30 minutes upfront with a proper 4-column grid. Has anyone else had a manager tell you to skip the fundamentals and then blame you when it falls apart?

22 hours to fix 12 door panels is brutal. But a 4 column grid is not really the right tool for vehicle wraps. Wraps have complex curves and panel breaks that don't follow a simple grid. You need to set up a custom baseline based on the actual vehicle measurements, not a fixed grid. Grids work great for flat layouts like brochures or websites. On a wrap, you have to measure each door panel separately and account for the gaps between them. A column grid would actually make the spacing worse if you just stretched it across all the panels. That old boss was wrong about eyeballing it, but he might have been right that a standard layout grid doesn't solve the problem.
