Tracing vs drawing shapes from scratch, 15 logos later

I used to freehand every logo in Illustrator until I tried tracing a scanned sketch over a 10 year old project file and the whole thing tightened up in half the time. The pen tool gets too fussy on the first pass, but building on a traced base keeps the organic feel without the angle jank. Has anyone else gone back to tracing after years of forcing the anchor points manually?

Wait, isn't that kinda backwards though? I mean, tracing always felt like it kills the looseness for me, like I end up with stiff lines that just follow the sketch instead of actually improving it.
