The guy who told me to "just use layers" in Photoshop almost broke my file

Back in February I was working on a poster for a local band in Portland and I had like 50 different elements all on one flat background. A buddy who does web design watched me for a minute and said "dude just use layers it's way faster." So I spent the next 45 minutes frantically cutting everything out and putting each piece on its own layer. Well I hit save and closed the project then when I opened it again all the layers were out of order and half the elements wouldn't show up at all. It took me another hour to redo everything from scratch because I didn't know how to group or label anything properly. Has anyone else had a well meaning tip from a friend totally blow up their project?

Haha @nora735, "just use layers" should come with a warning label and a tutorial.

Oh man, 45 minutes of cutting stuff out only for it to fall apart is rough. I swear "just use layers" is the new "turn it off and on again" for creative software.
