My $15 grid notebook beat my $2,000 monitor for layout work
Picked up a dotted grid notebook at a gas station in Ohio for $15 and now I'm sketching every responsive breakpoint by hand before opening Figma, has anyone else found that old-school thumbnail drawing actually speeds up their final design process?
How many rounds of sketches are you doing before you actually commit to a layout? I ask because I tried the notebook thing for a landing page last month and caught myself redrawing the same hero section like six times, which felt productive but was really just me stalling. What broke the spell for me was forcing a rule: three thumbnails max, then straight into code. The drawings that survived were usually the boring ones, like a simple stacked card grid at 375px, not the clever overlapping thing I kept trying to make work. Curious if you set any kind of limit or if you just draw until the idea clicks.
