A friend said my design files were a mess and it changed my whole system

They looked at a project folder and said, 'I can't find anything, this is chaos.' I started using a simple naming rule for every layer and group, like 'button_primary_active' instead of 'Group 23 copy'. Has anyone else fixed a messy file habit and what worked for you?

My old Figma files were a disaster zone... I had like twelve artboards just called "Homepage test". What finally clicked for me was adding dates to everything, like "hero_layout_2024_10". Do you keep old versions or just overwrite the main file?

The date thing is smart. I read somewhere that designers should treat their files like they are saving a game, you know? Keep the main version but also save a copy with the date before you make big changes. I do "homepage_v2_2024_10" now and it saves so much headache. Before I would just overwrite and then cry when I needed something from the old one. Learned that lesson the hard way.
