A client's 14mb PDF crashed my CAD file and I finally changed my workflow

Last Tuesday a client in Denver sent over a 14mb PDF of their existing floor plan to trace. My software choked for five minutes, then the whole project froze and I lost an hour of layer work because I hadn't saved since coffee. I usually just imported whatever they gave me, but this time I ran it through a free raster to vector converter first. The cleanup took ten minutes instead of fighting the file all afternoon. Anyone else got a go-to trick for prepping client files before they hit your main program?
