Unpopular opinion: street signs with too much info are a mess

I was walking through downtown Portland last week and noticed a sign at a busy intersection with like 8 different street names and arrows on it. I stood there for a solid minute trying to figure out which way to go. Whoever designed that thing forgot that people are driving by at 30 mph and don't have time to decode a grid. I ended up using a landmark instead. Has anyone else run into signs that just make things worse?

Ha, oh man, I feel this. I once got so confused by a sign I just pulled over, parked, and walked across the street to read it. Took a picture and everything. My friends still make fun of me for the "sign that broke me." I mean, if I need a map legend and a compass to figure out which street is which, that's a bad sign design, not a me problem. Maybe I should just try to aim for the nearest food cart next time and hope for the best.

Hate those signs that make you pull over just to read them.
