That 1000-pound vinyl banner I ordered without a grommet spec bit me at the job site
I've been designing large format signage for local shops here in Portland for about 5 years, and I always assumed clients hate seeing grommets because it makes the piece look temporary. So I'd do these clean, full bleed banners with welded hems and no metal, thinking it was the classy move. Last month I delivered a 10 foot wide banner for a brewery's street fair, and the owner asked me where the tie points were. I told him they didn't need them, he laughed and pointed to the gusty waterfront spot, and we spent 40 minutes zip tying through the corner hem while the damn thing flapped like a sail. That moment made me realize I was designing for my portfolio, not for the wind, the rain, or the person who actually has to hang the thing at 7 AM. Now I always spec at least 8 grommets on anything over 6 feet, and I ask where it's going before I even open the file. Has anyone else had a print job fail because you skipped the practical hardware for the sake of a cleaner look?

Gonna disagree a bit here. A well made banner with welded hems and a clean pole pocket can be just as durable as one with a million grommets. The real issue is matching the hardware to the install spot, not just adding metal everywhere. Grommets fail too, they rip out in high wind if the banner is oversized or the rope is too tight. I’ve hung plenty of clean edge banners in gusty spots using ratchet straps through slit pockets or a full width sleeve on a pipe, and they hold up fine all season. Design choice isn’t lazy, it’s just another way to solve a problem. The trick is asking the install question up front, like you said, but not assuming grommets are the only answer.
