Overheard someone at a coffee shop say 'good design is invisible' and it bugged me all day

They were talking about their minimal kitchen remodel and acted like flashy packaging or bold signs are somehow less valid... I clean houses for a living and see how much thought goes into the labels and boxes people toss in the trash, so why do we pretend the quiet stuff matters more?

Kinda missing the point that good packaging IS invisible design work.

And what about stuff that's supposed to be seen? Like, a bright yellow warning label on a cleaning product. That's not invisible. It's supposed to grab your eye so you don't poison yourself. Or those giant signs at the grocery store that help you find the milk. If that design was "invisible" nobody would ever find anything. Why do we act like hiding your work is the only real skill? Sometimes being loud and obvious is exactly the right call.
