My gradient map trick wasted 3 hours on a single logo file
I was trying to get this warm sunset gradient on a client's logo last Friday and kept getting weird banding. Turned out I had the wrong color mode set to 8-bit instead of 16-bit in Photoshop. Took me from 2pm to almost 5pm to figure that out, and I just sat there staring at the screen like an idiot. Anyone else ever burn a whole afternoon on a simple color setting?

Actually 8-bit is fine for most web work, banding usually happens from bad gradients in any bit depth. The real trick is adding a bit of noise to break up the bands, like 1-2% gaussian noise. That said, 16-bit does give you more room before the banding shows up, so you weren't totally off base. But three hours is rough, I've definitely done the same thing staring at a screen waiting for something to click.
