Grid lines vs freehand placement, my flyer project took 3 tries

Last week I made a flyer for a local garage sale and spent an hour trying to place everything by eye. It looked okay until my friend pointed out the text was drifting right on every section. Then I drew a simple 3-column grid in my software and moved the same blocks into it. Took maybe 20 minutes and looked way cleaner. Do most newbies just start with a grid from the start, or do you also fight the urge to freehand it first?
