A senior designer told me my kerning was 'all over the place' and I finally learned what tracking actually does

After she pointed out that my headlines looked like they were fighting each other, I spent an afternoon adjusting letter spacing per font size and now my layouts actually breathe, has anyone else had a simple fix like that totally change how they see space?

Tracking is overrated honestly. Most people reading your headlines won't notice the difference between tight and loose letters unless they're other designers staring at it for hours. You could have saved that afternoon and just bumped up the font size a point or two. The real trick is making sure your body text is readable, not obsessing over every space between letters. Senior designers love to throw around fancy terms like kerning to sound important. Half the time they can't even explain why it matters outside of a portfolio review.

Hear you on that, but isn't getting lost in the tiny stuff kind of the whole point for us? Like, if you're not gonna sweat the small things what even is there left to do besides stare at a blank page?
