Comparing Figma component libraries side by side made me pick one instantly

I spent last Friday comparing Material UI and IBM's Carbon side by side for a dashboard project. Material won because its form states (error, hover, disabled) feel more natural out of the box, while Carbon required too many overrides. Has anyone else found a clear winner between two systems like that?

Small correction: Material UI’s form states actually need quite a bit of custom work to match native browser behavior, especially around focus rings and validation. Carbon’s overrides feel heavier at first but they’re more consistent across all inputs once you get the hang of it.

Fiona nailed it. I went through the exact same thing last month with a client dashboard. Material looked cleaner at first glance, but once I started mapping out real form validation flows, I found myself fighting the focus ring behavior every time. Carbon felt like a slog in the beginning, but after maybe twenty minutes of tweaking, it just locked into place. Every input from text fields to dropdowns behaved the same way without me having to patch things for each one separately. Material made me feel like I was working against the system instead of with it. Carbon's consistency saved me from redoing the same custom CSS three times over.
