Stopped into a local coffee shop and their menu design caught me off guard
I was grabbing a cup at Brew Lab in Portland last weekend and noticed they used a handwritten chalk font for their entire menu board. It looked nice up close but from 6 feet away I could barely read half the drink names. Has anyone else run into this tradeoff between style and readability in public spaces?

Wait, chalk fonts usually look fine from a distance if they are drawn well with thick enough strokes.

3 blocks down the street from my place there's a coffee shop with one of those signs and up close it's literally unreadable. The letters bleed into each other and half the words just look like gray smudges from 10 feet away. I'm sorry but most people don't have the skill to pull off a good chalk font, it's way harder than it looks. And even the decent ones get ruined after a week of rain or wind or someone brushing against it. Honestly this whole chalkboard sign trend feels like something that peaked 5 years ago and just never died.
