Spent $180 on a standing desk mat, my back hates it
I work from home in Austin and finally gave in to the standing desk hype. Bought a cushioned anti-fatigue mat from a local office supply store, $180 after tax. First week was fine, but by day ten my calves felt like rocks and my lower back was worse than sitting all day. Turns out the extra squish makes me shift my weight unevenly, and I end up leaning on one hip. I tried going barefoot, then shoes, then flipping the mat over, nothing helped. I'm back to sitting 90% of the time and the mat is under my desk collecting dust. Has anyone else had this problem, or did I just pick a bad mat? What actually works for people who stand all day?
That squish problem you're describing is real, a mat that's too soft makes your feet sink in and your whole stance goes crooked without you even noticing. Something firmer like a thin rubber or gel mat gives you a stable base so your hips stay level, and rotating between standing and sitting every 30 minutes or so helps way more than any mat alone. Also worth trying a small footrest or a box to prop one foot on now and then, it takes the load off your lower back and keeps you from locking into one position all day.
