Walked past a house I painted 15 years ago and saw the same trim still holding up
I did a full exterior repaint on a craftsman in Portland back in 2009, and the trim around the windows still looks solid, no peeling. Think it's the prep work and oil-based primer that made the difference, not the paint itself. Anyone else notice a specific job that just refused to fail over the years?

Honestly, did you sand down to bare wood on that trim or just scuff the old paint before the oil primer? Curious because I've seen guys skip that step and the paint fails in two years. Tbh that prep work sounds like the real secret weapon there.

Oh man, you hit the nail on the head there. I stripped my own trim down to bare wood on a 1920s house and it was brutal, but the paint has held up like concrete for five years now. It's funny how in so many parts of life, people want to skip the hard boring stuff to get to the finish line faster. Like in gardening, you gotta fix the soil first or you'll just be fighting weeds and dead plants forever. Same with learning a new skill, nobody likes the beginner drills but they're what make you actually good later on. So yeah, that prep work is the real secret weapon, but most folks just don't have the patience for it. Did you end up sanding yours down or just scuff it up?
