The 1988 tile layout I copied from my grandma's kitchen finally bit me

I redid our bathroom floor last month using that diagonal grid pattern she swore by, and the corner cuts around the toilet flange are a nightmare now that the subfloor settled. Spent two full weekends fixing grout lines that drifted maybe 3/16 of an inch near the tub. Anyone else find old-school tricks just don't hold up on modern framing?
