That time I tried to match paint for a patch job in my hallway

I spent 3 whole weekends trying to match a 5 year old can of paint from the previous owner for a small nick in my living room wall. Ended up buying 4 different samples from 3 different stores and none of them looked right under my track lighting. Has anyone actually had success matching old paint or is it always a nightmare?

Is it really that hard when you can just hire a pro color matcher for like twenty bucks?

My grandma could match paint by eye in 2 minutes flat.
