Rented a floor sander vs. renting a drum sander for my oak floors... big mistake at first.

I tackled my 1920s living room floors in Nashville last weekend. Started with a drum sander because YouTube said it was faster, but I dug a trench in the middle of the room in like 10 seconds flat. Swapped it out for a random orbital floor sander and it took twice as long but I couldn't screw it up no matter how clumsy I was. Has anyone else had a close call with a drum sander on old hardwood or am I the only one who nearly ruined their whole floor?

Drum sanders definitely have a learning curve that can wreck a floor if you're not careful. Random orbit sanders are way more forgiving and still get the job done without the risk of gouges. Sounds like you made the smart call by swapping it out before things got worse.
