PSA: I thought my wife was nuts for wanting a 'mudroom' in our 900 square foot house
She drew up plans for a tiny entryway with a bench and hooks, and I was sure it would just make the hall feel cramped. We built it last fall, and now the floor isn't covered in boots and wet coats every time it rains. That little bench is where we put groceries down, which is a game changer. Anyone else add a small feature they thought was pointless that turned out to be the best part?

Okay but is it really that big of a deal? I mean, it's just a bench and some hooks. My floor gets a little wet sometimes, I just wipe it up. Seems like a lot of work for a small payoff (and you lost some hallway space, right?). I guess if you have a ton of kids it might help, but for two people it feels like overkill.

Read an article that said small entryways cut down on cleaning (hey @betty_fisher5, it really does).

totally agree with the payoff thing, but @betty_fisher5 you're missing the point. it's not about the bench or the hooks. it's about the mudroom not existing. less square footage to maintain means less time with a mop in your hand.
i have a tiny shoe tray and a single hook. floor gets wet sometimes but it's like three square feet. takes thirty seconds to wipe. your hallway space is a trade off but honestly i'd rather lose two feet of hallway than spend an extra hour every week cleaning a whole room.
you don't need a ton of kids for it to matter. it's just less surfaces to collect dust and dog hair. simpler is better.
