Old lumberyard in Ohio taught me more than any design course
Back in 2009 I was helping a buddy flip a 1920s house near Columbus. The lumberyard owner, a guy named Ray who was probably 70, watched me measure a window casing three times and then handed me a piece of scrap and said 'the house will tell you the size if you listen.' He made me lay the trim flat against the old frame and trace the gaps with a pencil. That hour changed how I approach every renovation now. I still sketch by hand first before touching any digital layout tool. Has anyone else had a contractor or supplier teach them a method that beat their formal training?
