My neighbor's kitchen reno made me rethink open shelving

My neighbor has this huge open shelf setup in her kitchen and she was telling me about it at our block party last weekend. She said 'I love how it looks but I spend 20 minutes a week dusting every single dish on those things.' That hit different for me because I was literally planning to rip out my upper cabinets and do the same thing. Now I'm wondering if a mix of closed cabinets and just a few open shelves is the smarter move. Has anyone else talked themselves out of a design trend after seeing it in real life?

Oh man, dusting every single dish every week. That's the kind of thing you don't think about when you're drooling over magazine photos. I saw a friend's house where she had these cute little floating shelves for coffee mugs and cookbooks. Looked great but you could literally see the grease film building up near the stove. Made me second guess the whole idea. I ended up doing one small open shelf for stuff I use every day and kept everything else behind doors. Way less work, same look.

Man it's funny how many things in life are like that. You see a picture or get an idea and it looks so clean and simple, but the actual day-to-day work of keeping it that way is a whole different story. Really makes you appreciate the stuff you don't see in those perfect photos.
