My contractor friend laughed at my subfloor prep...
I visited his remodel job site downtown last Thursday and watched him put down new tile. He pointed at the subfloor and said "this is delaminating in three spots, you gotta cut it out." I always thought patch compound would fix uneven spots... turns out he was right, one year later my own bathroom tile started cracking right along those same lines. Has anyone else had to rip up tile because they skimped on the subfloor repair?

Didn't you just hate that sinking feeling when the grout line split? I learned same way last spring.

Ha, welcome to the "I knew better" club, buddy! Patch compound is for hiding the truth, not fixing it, and the tile always finds out. I've seen more cracked floors from skimping on subfloor work than from anything else, it's like the house is holding a grudge. So yeah, you paid the tuition fee, but at least now you know better than to argue with the guy holding the trowel.
