Caught myself painting walls without any primer for 5 years

I was redoing my living room last month in Portland and my neighbor stopped by to see the progress. He asked what primer I was using and I told him I just paint straight on the drywall with two coats. He looked at me like I had three heads and explained that primer seals the surface and makes the color pop way better. I felt so stupid because I've painted three bedrooms and a kitchen over the last 5 years without ever buying a single can of primer. The next day I grabbed some Killz at Home Depot and tested it on a small patch of wall. The difference was night and day, the paint went on so smooth and even. Has anyone else skipped primer and regretted it later?

My sunburn peeling always makes me look like a shedding lizard, not cute at all.
