Warning: my dark theme looked great on 3 phones and like mud on an old Android tablet from 2018
I remember when dark mode was just a toggle and we all felt lucky to have it, but now I'm dealing with greys that totally fall apart on cheap screens. Last Friday I finished up a theme with a nice #121212 background and soft white text, tested it on my phone and laptop, and felt pretty good about it. Then a buddy pulled it up on his old Fire tablet and the text looked washed out and the greys practically melted into each other. Turns out those panels crush dark values hard, so what reads as clean contrast on an OLED turns into one big grey smear. I bumped my light text up to #E0E0E0 and added a bit more separation between my surface layers, and it held up way better. Anyone else had a theme look perfect on your own setup and then fall apart the second it hit a cheap screen?
