The bar near my apartment uses pure black backgrounds and it hurts my eyes every time
I grabbed a coffee at this place called The Grind on 5th Street last night and they have their menu on a big screen with black backgrounds and white text. It's like a 10 on the contrast scale which sounds good on paper but my eyes were watering after 30 seconds. Why do people think dark mode means #000000 black? I use #1A1A2E for my own app projects and it's way easier on the eyes. Anyone else notice this trend of cranking the contrast way too high?

Man I used to think high contrast was the way to go but you totally changed my mind with that hex code, gonna have to try it out.

High contrast was the way to go" - yeah I was the same way for years. I actually heard this designer talk about how using softer tones makes the colors pop more somehow. You ever notice that in nature, like how a sunset looks better with those subtle gradients? Definitely give that hex a shot, curious what you think.
