Stood in a dim bar bathroom and finally got why my dark mode was off

I was at this dive bar off Grand Avenue last week, using their bathroom, and the lighting was just this single warm bulb. I pulled out my phone to check a mockup I had been working on, and the dark mode design I thought was killer suddenly looked like a muddy mess. The contrast ratios I had been testing on my bright work monitor just fell apart in actual low light. The backgrounds looked too black, the text was hard to read, and the accent colors felt harsh. It hit me that I had never tested my dark themes in a real dark environment, only on a screen with the brightness cranked down. I went home and reworked the whole thing with a softer off-black base and lower contrast text, and it reads way better now. Has anyone else found a weird real world spot that exposed problems with their design?

Wait, are you sure the problem is the dark mode itself and not just poor lighting in a dive bar bathroom? Most real world environments have actual light sources, like overhead lights, street lamps, or even just a computer screen glow. I use dark mode on my phone in my car at night and it looks fine. The whole point of dark mode is to reduce eye strain in low light, not to make things pop like a movie poster. If your design falls apart in one weird dim bathroom, maybe the issue is you're trying to make it work in spaces where nobody's staring at a screen for long. I’ve seen plenty of dark mode sites that look great on my couch or in bed, which is where most people actually use them.
