Read a study that said 78% of people pick dark mode if it's the default option

I was looking at some user research from Nielsen Norman Group last week and that number blew my mind. It means default settings are WAY more powerful than just making a good dark theme. How do you decide what the default should be for a new app?

That Nielsen Norman study is solid, but I'm pretty sure the 78% figure was for picking dark mode when it was available, not necessarily the default. The default effect is still huge though. For a new app, I'd look at what the operating system is doing and match that. Most phones are dark by default now, so that's probably the safe bet. What kind of app are you thinking about?

Match the OS default to avoid that initial friction.

Matching OS default is fine for established apps. But new apps need to stand out. If everyone matches the dark mode default, the whole interface starts looking the same. That initial friction you're worried about? It's actually a chance to show users something different right away. Good design can overcome that tiny hurdle in seconds.
