My kid asked why my phone looks like a cave at night, and it made me rethink my whole dark theme
Last week my 9 year old grabbed my phone to look up a video and asked why the screen looked like a cave. I had my dark theme set to pure black with white text, and she said it felt scary and hard to read. That got me thinking about how I built the app I run for my pest control jobs, all black with bright white labels. I switched the background from #000000 to a dark gray around #1c1c1e and dropped the text to a soft off white, and suddenly I could read the schedule screen at 6am without squinting. The pure black was making my eyes work harder because the contrast was so harsh. Now I want to know, does anyone else pick gray over black on purpose, or am I just getting old?
Your kid just saved your eyeballs and you're calling it a midlife crisis. Pure black with bright white is a rookie move for long reading, and every screen nerd knows it. Going gray is like turning down the high beams so you can actually see the road. Welcome to the club, we meet on Tuesdays and complain about glare. Your 9 year old is smarter about design than half the apps I use.
