My eye doctor in Boise said my dark theme's blue was making her squint, and I felt that
I showed her the mockup on my phone while waiting for my pupils to dilate, and she pointed at my accent color and said it looked like a flashlight in a cave. She was about 60 and doesn't design anything, just reads charts all day, so it hit harder than any critique from a coworker. I pulled the saturation down 30 percent that night and the whole screen finally felt calm. Does anyone here test their palette on someone outside the field before shipping?

I used to roll my eyes at stuff like this, honestly. I figured if the contrast passed the check then it was fine and asking your dentist or whoever was just wasted time. But then my mom looked at a site I built and said the orange made her eyes tired, and I kind of brushed it off until I watched her actually squint at it for a minute straight. She reads recipes on her phone all day, no design background at all, and she caught something a whole team of us missed. Now I show my colors to my husband or whoever is around before I ship, because people who just look at screens for a living see it different than we do.
