I dialed back the white in my dark theme and it worked better

I had this thing where I'd crank text to full white on a black screen. Once I swapped to a light gray, folks told me it was easier on their eyes during late nights. How do you balance text and background to avoid glare?

But isn't max contrast just better for clear reading, harsh or not?

My roommate set her e-reader to max contrast last Tuesday. She got a migraine so intense she spent the whole evening in bed with the lights off. I used to swear by high contrast for reading, but watching her suffer made me rethink that. The extreme black and white can actually strain your eyes a lot. It's not just about clarity if it makes you feel sick. Some settings are better left alone.
