I counted my dark mode colors last night and got 47 grays, that number broke my brain
I sat down with a color picker app last night and counted every gray in my app's dark theme. Forty seven. I thought I had maybe 12. Most of them I couldn't even tell apart on screen, they were so close together. I built this thing over 8 months and every new screen I added, I just grabbed a slightly different gray without thinking. The dark surface color on my settings page is 3 shades off from the one on my home screen and I never noticed. Now I'm going through and cutting it down to a set of 6 grays with real names so I stop doing this. How many surface shades do you all actually keep per theme before it gets out of hand?
Wow, 47 is wild but I get it. I used to think a couple extra grays here and there was no big deal, then I tried to change my theme later and had to hunt down every shade, and that sold me on keeping the list tiny. Six feels right, maybe 8 if you count borders, anything past that and you stop being able to spot the gaps.
