Had to pick between pure black dark mode and a dark gray one for my app
I went with pure black because it looked cleaner in mockups, but now users are complaining about eye strain on OLED screens. Anyone else deal with this catch-22?

Ugh I totally get this. I had the same thing happen with a reading app I worked on. Pure black looked so great in the design files but once people started using it at night they said it gave them headaches. One person even said it felt like staring into a void haha. I ended up switching to a very dark charcoal and barely anyone complained after that. The trick was making it dark enough to still feel sleek but with just a tiny bit of color so the eyes can relax.

My dentist does this too, pure white walls hurt my eyes so bad I couldn't focus on anything.
