Contrast ratio obsession wrecked my dark theme at 2am

I spent 3 hours in a hotel lobby in Denver fine-tuning text to hit exactly 4.5:1 on everything, then woke up the next morning and realized the whole app looked like gray soup because I killed all the visual hierarchy, so now I aim for 7:1 on primary text and let secondary content slide down to 3:1, has anyone else found WCAG minimums actually make dark UI feel flat?

You ever have one of those mornings where you open your laptop and hate everything you did the night before? A buddy of mine spent a whole red-eye flight tweaking contrast ratios on a dashboard for a client, got it to pass every checker out there, then showed it to his team the next day and they asked if the design was even finished. He said it looked like someone took a highlighter to wet newspaper, all gray and washed out. He ended up walking most of it back to like 5.5:1 on headers and letting muted stuff sit around 2.5:1, and suddenly the page had depth again. Sometimes the rules are just a floor, not the ceiling you got to live in.
