Changed my mind about pure black backgrounds after a before and after test
I always thought #000000 was the peak of dark mode until I tested it on a 27 inch monitor at my desk in Seattle. The before and after was wild: pure black made the white text bleed, but switching to #121212 cut that glow right out. Anyone else land on a specific gray they swear by?

That bit about the white text bleed on a 27 inch screen is the part people miss. On a phone or laptop the difference between #000000 and #121212 is barely there, but blow it up to a big panel and the halation gets obvious. One thing I never see brought up is panel type. On my OLED the true black pixels actually turn off, so the glow mostly comes from my eyes dealing with bright text on dark ground, and a gray backdrop only fixes it by giving the letter edges something to sit against. On a cheap IPS the backlight bleeds through anyway, so gray might not help much at all. Your Seattle test says more about that monitor than about dark mode in general.
