Am I the only one who flipped from pure black backgrounds to dark gray after staring at my phone at 2am?
For two years I built every dark theme on #000000 because it looked so clean on my monitor, but then I started waking up with my eyes stinging after reading in bed around 2am. I switched my whole palette to #121212 six months ago after a friend said pure black against bright text makes the letters look like they're vibrating, and my late night reading stopped hurting. The weird part is my battery barely changed on my OLED phone, so I gained comfort and lost almost nothing. Now I use #000000 only for small accents like buttons and keep big areas at #121212. Does anyone here keep pure black for the whole app, or did you all move to gray too?
Kept pure black on my main reading app for years and never had the vibrating letter problem people talk about. For me the switch to gray actually made things worse because the contrast got muddy and I had to turn my brightness up, which defeats the whole point. Maybe it comes down to the screen and how close you hold the phone, because my eyes never stung at 2am with true black. I do agree on the battery thing though, the savings on OLED are way overblown for most apps. If gray works for you then stick with it, but not everyone needs to jump on that train.
