A user told my dark mode text was 'aggressive' now I check contrast ratios constantly
Some guy on a feedback thread said my dark mode made his eyes water because I had pure white text on a true black background. I dropped my text color to #E0E0E0 and added a 15% gray background instead of #000000 and now it actually feels way easier to read. Has anyone else had to dial back their contrast after user complaints?

Yeah, pure white on black is brutal. 80% gray on dark gray is the sweet spot.

Michael, you're right about the 80% gray. I had the same problem you described. My first dark mode was pure white on black and I got complaints about it being harsh right away. Dropping the text to #D4D4D4 and using a dark navy blue background instead of true black made a huge difference. Took me a while to find that balance where it's still dark but doesn't feel like staring into a flashlight.
