A talk with my neighbor about his phone screen at night
He was reading outside after dark and his bright screen lit up the whole yard. I suggested he try dark mode, but he said the text was blurry. That made me see how important it is to pick colors with enough contrast for outdoor use. Now I test my designs in low light to make sure they work for everyone.

Did you ever try a middle-ground theme, since I also gave up on pure light mode after similar struggles?

That blurry text thing is so real. I've been there trying to read my phone in the backyard at night and just giving up because my eyes can't focus on the gray-on-gray. One time I was trying to check a map while camping and the dark theme made all the trail lines just vanish into the background. Now I keep my phone on light mode 24/7 even though it burns my eyes out in the dark, because at least I can actually see the words. It's a weird choice to make.
