A diner in Pittsburgh taught me why warm dark tones beat pure black

Last month I stopped at a small diner outside Pittsburgh and noticed their menu boards used a deep brownish gray instead of straight black. It felt softer on the eyes, like the walls were part of the room instead of a hole in it. I tried the same trick on a settings page this week, swapping #000 for something like #1a1714, and the whole layout felt calmer. Has anyone else moved away from pure black backgrounds and found a warm neutral works better for long reading sessions?
