A dev in Austin told me to test dark mode at 3 percent brightness, and he was dead right
I thought he was messing with me, but two weeks of building a dashboard in near black showed me my gray text was basically invisible and the borders were the only thing holding the layout together. Anyone else been burned by a low brightness test, or do you just trust contrast checkers and call it done?
Tbh this is the same thing as washing your car at noon and thinking it looks clean until the sun hits it at an angle and you see every smudge. Small screens at low light have a way of showing you the truth that your nice bright monitor at noon never will. So I always test dim now, dark room, phone at 10 percent, and it has saved me from shipping ugly more times than any contrast tool ever has.
