Wasted $120 on a 'military-grade' VPN that did nothing

I signed up for this expensive VPN after a sketchy airport wifi scare in Chicago, thinking the fancy encryption claims would protect me from everything. Turns out my browser was leaking DNS requests the whole time, and a free extension caught it instantly. Anyone else get burned by marketing hype on security tools instead of just testing what they actually do?

And that router thing is the perfect example of how these "security" companies are really just selling you a false sense of safety. The factory password thing happens way more than people think, you can literally google the default login for most hardware and it just works. I've seen people drop serious cash on firewalls and then leave the admin panel open to the whole network because they never changed the basic settings. At that point you're not paying for protection, you're paying for the sticker on the box that makes you feel better about ignoring the actual setup.

Did your friend try turning off the VPN's own DNS setting, or was it just a total dud? My buddy spent big on a "secure" router once and found out the factory password was still set, so he basically paid to get hacked slower.
