That free VPN download came back to bite me in Tulsa

I spent 6 months using a random VPN app from a sponsored ad for hotel wifi, until my bank called about a $900 charge from overseas, and that's when I checked the app permissions and saw it had access to my texts and contacts the whole time, so has anyone else had a supposedly safe tool turn out to be the weak link?
