Stumbled on a stat that 60% of data breaches come from insider threats
Saw that number in a Verizon report from 2023 and it threw me - always figured it was hackers from outside sneaking in. Has anyone else noticed their own team accidentally clicking the wrong links?

The 60% stat is kinda misleading though. Most of those 'insider threats' are from people who got phished or had their credentials stolen by outsiders anyway. So technically the breach still starts from the outside. If you break it down, actual malicious insiders or straight up accidents like sending data to the wrong person are way less common than that number makes it sound. The report even says most are from privileged credential misuse which is just a fancy way of saying someone got tricked.

@faith_smith that's a solid point but Verizon still counts stolen creds as insider since the user is the weak link.
