Spent 4 hours chasing a phantom WiFi disconnect in my home office

Turns out my router was auto-updating firmware at 2pm every Tuesday, which kicked my work laptop off for 3-4 minutes. Has anyone else had a smart device sabotage their connection like that?

Your router just wanted a little "me time" every Tuesday at 2pm, apparently. Did you try setting a weekly date with it instead of fighting the ghost?

Oh come on, you're really going to defend the router on this one? It's a machine, not a moody teenager. It doesn't need "me time" or a weekly date, it just needs to do its job. Rebooting it at the same time every week is literally the manufacturer's recommendation for some models, not some romantic negotiation. If your router is so fragile it can't handle a simple power cycle without you buying it dinner first, then you need a better router. All this talk about "me time" and "date night" with electronics is just making excuses for bad hardware. It's a box with lights, not a pet.
