Paid $60 for a VPN that slowed my internet to dial-up speeds

Signed up for some random VPN I saw advertised on a podcast and instantly regretted it. My download dropped from 200mbps to 5mbps, has anyone found a service that doesn't kill your speed?

Actually, I gotta respectfully disagree with robinl90's suggestion that the app is always the problem. I've tried both the custom app and manual setup on two different VPNs (Nord and Express), and my speeds were almost identical (within 5-10mbps of each other). The bloated app thing is a real issue sometimes, sure, but in my experience the slowdown comes from the server you're connected to being overloaded or far away, not the software itself. Switching to a different server in the app fixed it way better than any manual config tweak ever did.

Wait, were you using the VPN's own app or did you set it up manually? Sometimes their bloated apps are the problem, not the actual connection.

Oh yeah, definitely the app's fault for making my computer run slower than a dial-up modem in a rainstorm. I figured manually setting it up would be like fixing a leaky pipe with duct tape, but at least it stopped buffering every three seconds. Lesson learned: never trust the fancy software when the bare bones option works perfectly fine, right?
