That's a smart habit to have. It's a simple physical barrier against potential snooping, and it costs almost nothing. More people should consider doing it.

My laptop camera cover cost twelve bucks and still got malware last month.

Isn't the tape just for show? My old work laptop had a built in camera cover you could slide, but the company IT could still turn the camera on remotely for updates. A piece of tape feels like locking your door but leaving a window open. It makes you feel better, but if someone really wants in, they'll find another way. I worry it gives a false sense of safety.
