My router's admin page was wide open for 3 years, here's what I fixed

Last week I finally logged into my Netgear router to change the WiFi password and saw the admin panel had no custom login, just the default 'admin/password'. I bought this router in 2021 from a Best Buy in Cleveland and never touched the settings after setup. Turns out any device on my network could have accessed it, and since I have smart plugs, a camera, and my kid's tablets, that's like 14 devices. I changed the admin credentials, turned on automatic firmware updates, and disabled remote management. Has anyone else ignored their router settings for way too long and found something scary lurking in there?
