My 2FA backup codes were in my email drafts, dumbest setup ever

A month ago I locked myself out of my main Google account because I upgraded my phone and didn't move my authenticator app over. Turns out the backup codes I saved in my own email drafts were useless since I couldn't log in to read them. I spent 3 days going through recovery forms and finally got back in with a text to my old number. Now I keep a printed copy in my fire safe and another with my brother, has anyone else stored recovery stuff in a way that backfired?

Man that is brutal but honestly it kinda tracks with how we treat security stuff like a chore instead of something real until it bites us. I think most folks including me have that moment where you realize the thing you set up to save you is just another lock with a lost key. The printed copy and the brother backup is smart though, sometimes the low tech answer is the one that actually works when the high tech stuff decides to fail. Have you thought about putting a copy in your glovebox too or is the fire safe enough?
