Bought a $40 used router from a garage sale and it had a rootkit installed from the factory

The previous owner had no idea, but the firmware was hacked to send all their traffic through a server in Russia - how do you check used networking gear before plugging it in?

Honestly that's terrifying, dude. Good reminder to always reflash any used networking gear with fresh firmware from the official site the second you get it, even if it's a pain.

Yeah, nothing like a little Russian roulette with your home network for 40 bucks. Just flash it fresh or use it as a fancy paperweight.
