Almost got got by a fake bank text at 11pm in my kitchen and here's the dumb thing that saved me
So last Tuesday around 11pm I'm standing in my kitchen waiting for my tea to heat up and my phone buzzes with a text that says my bank locked my card and I need to click a link to verify. I'm half asleep so I actually tapped it and got as far as typing the first few digits of my card number before something felt off. The site looked right, had the logo and everything, but the URL had a weird hyphen in it and my bank's real site never has that. I closed the tab, called the number on the back of my actual card, and sure enough the text was fake and they confirmed nobody had tried to lock anything. The thing that saved me was pretty dumb honestly, I had turned on alerts for any charge over $50 about 6 months ago, and the scam text came at a time when I knew I hadn't bought anything. So my real tip is set those balance and charge alerts, not just for the money but because it gives you a baseline of what your bank actually sends you. Has anyone else noticed these fake bank texts getting way better at copying the real thing lately, and what finally made you spot one?
